Exploring Yoga in Recovery

yogainrecovery.png

Learning to trust the body is an important part of recovery so it makes sense to include it in the process. But how do we do that if we still see physical movement and activity solely as a means to change the body?

It can be a challenge, but if we can consider the idea that the body can teach the mind, we can begin to approach movement from a place of curiosity and exploration as a way to begin to listen to, and ultimately trust, the body.

Join Kristen Wilson, registered yoga instructor, in this 4-week series to explore sensation within the body through the use of slow, conscious, rhythmic movement and adaptive yoga techniques.

This is a collaborative series that is open to anyone, regardless of perceived ability, who desires to explore sensation and movement as part of their recovery process.

Bio:

Kristen Wilson is a registered yoga instructor. She is eating disorder-recovered and also lives with anxiety and major depressive disorder. She uses adaptive yoga principles and teachings to support her own recovery and she enjoys supporting others by sharing what she has learned, and continues to learn, through her own practice and experience.

Location: Body Brave, 1047 Main Street East (Parking is available on the street directly in front of the building)

Cost: Free of charge, donations are always welcome. As a non-profit, we rely on your generosity to keep our doors open.

Yoga mats, blocks and props are available at Body Brave.

Registration is required. Limited spaces available.

Yoga for Bigger Bodies

Body Brave Summer 2019.png

These yoga classes are offered specifically with non-traditional yoga bodies in mind. Classes occur in a comfortable, non-competitive environment. Absolute beginners are welcome along with any other “level.” No yoga experience is necessary.

From Patricia:

"I’ve had a lifelong love for music and movement and over the years I kept coming to yoga, but never quite found the right “fit” - a place where I felt included and seen as a woman in a non traditional yoga body. I finally found my way to SoulSessions and Katrina Bultje a few years ago now and I haven’t looked back. I completed my RYT 200hour training with Katrina at Soul Flow Yoga in Hamilton in June 2018 and then went on to complete Yoga For All training as well. I am passionate about making the magic of yoga accessible to all bodies because at its heart, yoga is a practice of unity, inclusion, compassion and love. Come - just as you are - to move and groove and connect!”

Mindful Breathing

mindful breathing

Through guided mindful breathing exercises, and short periods of silently meditating on our breathing, we improve our ability to stay focused in the present moment, without regretting the past or worrying or rushing to the future. Within a small group, those who wish to share are then welcome  to do so in this supportive space. Experienced group leader Ginny Megin, who has dealt with eating issues herself, has seen benefits from this practical approach, the main ones being a greater sense of calm and more moments of random happiness. No experience is needed.

Each session is stand alone. Registration for all sessions is not required.

When: Thursdays, starts June 13, 10:30-11:30am

Location: Body Brave, 1047 Main Street East (Parking is available on the street directly in front of the building)

Cost: Free of charge, donations are always welcome. As a non-profit, we rely on your generosity to keep our doors open.

Yoga mats, blocks and props are available at Body Brave.

Registration is required. An initial appointment is NOT required for this group. Limited spaces available.

Non-Diet Nutrition Basics

Nondiet Nutrition Basics.png

This 4-week online educational workshop series is focused on developing your nutrition knowledge from a non-diet, weight-inclusive lens. Each week we will dive into a different nutrition topic such as understanding macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fat), the anatomy and physiology of digestion and metabolism, an introduction to weight science, and debunking some common nutrition myths. Throughout this series we will be revisiting the idea of building a healthy relationship to food, and how to integrate your new-found nutrition knowledge in your life. This group is open to anyone, but is not a substitute for individualized 1:1 nutrition counselling.

*Content warning* for those who are easily triggered by discussing nutrition in detail (ie: some use of numbers for teaching purposes), however all material is designed with these sensitivities in mind.

Developed by Facilitated by Non-Diet Dietitian Courtenay Vickers RD.

Where: Online, through the Ontario Telemedicine Network’s secure online video conferencing system (a link will be sent to you by email one week before the group starts. All instructions will be included).

When: Tuesdays, May 14-June 18, 1-2:15pm

Yoga for Bigger Bodies

Body Brave Summer 2019.png

Join certified yoga teacher Patricia Rutherford for a gentle, candlelit class with joyful movement and mindful breath.

Type: Gentle movement class

Time: Thursdays, starts June 6- June 27, 7:30-8:30pm

Location: Danielle’s Place, 895 Brant Street Unit 3 Burlington Ontario L7R 2J6 . Danielle’s Place is kindly donating the use of their space!

Cost: PWYC (Pay what you can), all proceeds go towards keeping Body Brave's doors open.

Yoga mats and props are available for use at Danielle’s Place.

Please note: Demand for our classes is high and spaces are limited. Please ensure you are able to attend before you register.
